SCIENTIFIC AND SURGICAL ACTIVITY:
After a training period residency done in Lisbon, and complemented
with periods of training in England with Prof. John Blandy and Mr. Turner
Warwick, fellowship in Urology in 1975, including a Training of 3 years
in General Surgery.Professor Assistant of Urology 1978 New
University Faculty of Medicinal Science. Became Chief of Department
in 1980, after a public contest.Since then being the chief of young
team of urologists, developed a work with them, organizing round tables,
Symposiums, Courses of E.S.O. (the first Course of Urogical Oncology organized
by the E.S.O. was done in Lisbon) and almost all of them are now experts
and Chief of Service all over the country.Since 1978 belongs to
the E.O.R.T.C. GU Group developing an activity related with Oncological
Tumors participating in various clinical trials.In 1986 was nominated
Chairman of the Committee on Q-Life of the GU-Group and developed a lot
of work on Prostate Cancer in cooperation with Neil Aaronson of the Cancer
Institute in Amsterdam and with protocol 30853 (Orchiectomy versus Zoladex
+ Flutamide) developed the first trial with a quality of life questionaire
and results are published in Cancer.
Appointed National Coordinator of E.O.R.T.C. GU Group (Portugal) in 1987
and creates the Portuguese Genito Urinary Group of the E.O.R.T.C., devloping
a lot of activities in the field of Urological Oncology in Portugal, promoting
investigational clinical trials namely in Prostate and Bladder tumors,
and the results have been published and communicated all over the world.
We have visited most of the Urological Departments, not only in Europe,
but also in America, namely Fundació Puigvert (Barcelona), Middelheim
Hospital (Antwerp), Erasmus University (Rotterdam), London Hospital, Midlesex
Hospital Aachen University Hospital, Istituto Europeo di Oncologia, Cleveland
Clinic, Waine State University (Detroit), where we have been invited to
participate in the field of Urological Oncology.
We have cooperate in all the Consensus Conferences in Bladder and Prostate
organized by the E.O.R.T.C. GU Group, under the auspicious of the E.O.R.T.C.
being part of the committee contributing to the publication of the conclusions.
We have been invited to be a member of the Board of Scientific Advisors
of the EIO Prostate Centre and accepted to participate.
We have been invited to be a member of the Board of Scientific Advisors

We have organized the screening program of Prostatic Cancer in Portugal
, being part of the E.R.S.P.C. European Randomized Study of Screening
for Prostate Cancer, being member of the Scientific Committee and Quality
Control Committee, and Chairman of the Q.Life Committee.We became a member
of College of Portuguese Urologists in 1975.
Since then we developed an intensive surgical activity, first within all
the topics of the specialty but since the last ten years, namely Urological
Oncology, performing radical prostatectomy, radical nephrectomy, lymphdenectomy,
urinary diversion, continent urinary diversion, radical cystectomy.
